Lost World Adventures in Savage Lands of Science Fiction and Fantasy

The Lost World genre arose during that era when Archaeological expeditions were big news, discovering amazing remnants of lost civilizations around the world like the tombs of Egypt's Valley of the Kings, the stronghold of Troy, jungle-shrouded pyramids of the Maya, or the cities and palaces of the Assyrian Empire. Thus, real stories of archaeological finds by imperial adventurers succeeded in setting imaginations on fire. Between 1871 and the First World War, the number of lost-world adventures set on every continent became mainstream fiction literature.

"King Solomon's Mines"

"She"

"Blond Savage"

In 1885 H Ryder Haggard wrote "King Solomon's Mines" the Genesis of the "Lost World" genre, which would inspire Edgar Rice Burroughs' The Land That Time Forgot, Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World, Rudyard Kipling's The Man Who Would Be King and H. P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. Lee Falk's The Phantom and a much later Lost World novel was Michael Crichton's Congo."She" by H Rider Haggard tells of a Victorian professor and his adopted son travel in search of a lost civilization. Finding it ruled by a near-immortal woman of extraordinary beauty, power and cruelty, they are helpless to resist her plans to marry the son and rule the British Empire. First published 1n 1887, this thrill ride has never been out of print...

"Xoshi and the Olamek in the Wilderness"

"Return to The Hollow Earth"

"High Priestess of the Lizardmen"

The lost world is a setting in fantasy or science fiction involving the discovery and exploration of an unknown world out of sync with our time, space, or both. It could be a world at the Earth's core or a civilization in our hollow moon or caves deep in a jungle. perhaps a portal gateway to another dimension... or an unexpected discovery in our solar system... It evolved out of the late-Victorian romantic adventure novels  and continues to be popular to this day... These stories have been full of the powerful women men dream about for over a hundred years - the ones modern authors and film makers just can't seem to get right.
