Welcome to my blog. It's a work in progress and will eventually contain many articles on a variety of subjects... this is the first. For years now, people have asked me to take photos of the various stages of one of my oil paintings to see how it comes together, A lot of work for zero pay? One day I received a commission from a breeder of Arabian Horses with no deadline so I took the opportunity to photograph it in stages from pencil outline drawing to the finished oil painting...

Here's a look at the finished pencil drawing and my workshop...
I avoid shading and blending and stick mostly to pencil and ink
outlines as to not waste time and effort...
After completing the outlines I apply a layer of clear Galkyd Gamsol Medium to seal the pencil so I can avoid smearing and of course if I don't like how some of the first layers turned out I can simply wipe the away with a cloth soaked in mineral spirits and do it over...
The first layers of color always make me feel like I'm ruining the picture if I don't focus on the area I'm working on and ONLY the area I'm working on
The end of day one. This photo makes the lines look a lot darker than
they really were. I got a better camera soon after this...
