Surrealism is a literary and artistic movement launched in 1924 by the French poet Andre' Breton proclaiming the radical transformation of all existing social, scientific, and philosophical values through the total liberation of the subconscious.

Salvador Dali's name has become synonymous with surrealism. His subconscious mind saw things that should be rigid were limp or melting and reflected it in his work with a sense of horror. Melting things are not always surrealistic and surrealism is potentially as vast as the human psyche.

Everyone has different things enslaved in their subconscious mind. The monsters and beauty goddesses shackled in Johnson's subconscious mind run free in his art.

David loves to do custom Fantasy book covers like the one to your right, especially to help emerging writers. Publishing calls for a different shape than traditional picture framing. Many of David's Fantasy Art posters can be modified to add more space at the top with Adobe Photoshop (tm) Software. In the early days of David's career adding canvas space was as impossible as growing a second head...

"If you've never seen the Lon Chaney Sr. Phantom of the Opera you're really missing out. The immortal classic silent film masterpiece provided the inspiration for this  piece."

"Classic Myths and Legends never fail to captivate my imagination and can be great fantasy illustrations with all their gods and monsters, not to mention all the beautiful ladies."

" My  favorite  fantasy illustration themes have always been the two-fisted tales of fantastic adventure in the heroic tradition and the classic fairy tale..."

"...the true measure of a fantasy artist  is not the subject matter or the technique , but is always the amount of "magic" in the air ...and whether the picture tells a story..." ~HDJ

AMAZON WARRIORS from ancient myth and legend were among the few fantasy warrior women of traditional folklore

MODERN MYTHOLOGY? ( "Goblin Fighter Halith" left 2010 digital) Was done for a Fantasy book cover. Chicks in chain mail? The warrior woman has emerged in recent times as ferocious and deadly as the mightiest male warriors of myth and history. The weaker sex? Not in these stories! The oddest part of this fun new phenomenon in fantasy art, cartoons, novels and movies is the eagerness of certain writers to pretend they always existed and to present historical figures in this light. Generals participating in battle plans? Yes! Judges and mayors? Yes! Battlefield combatants? No. Celtic Women were more like Warrior Queen Boudica (above right) and were more like cheerleaders on those days in history when the battles were actually fought. If their man was cowardly on the battlefield, they were eyewitnesses and you can rest assured he wished he was dead when he got home.

Artist's Statement:

A portrait of the artist in his painting studio as he is today. This September 2009 photo was taken by his youngest son Erich.

"Did you know that many of the breathtaking works Pre-Raphaelites were doing in oils in the 1800’s were declared not to be Art? In London the Royal Academy had a very narrow view as to what qualified. No wonder Rossetti led a rebellion against them. How about Styles? Impressionism is a great example; It was not enough that these institutions rejected the work, but they felt the need to destroy the person’s reputation and livelihood. Of course collectors pay millions for these Impressionistic paintings now, and Curators, Historians and Professional Art Critics all hail them as sensitive works of fine art. When Monet submitted his work to the Salon in Paris, they said" A monkey has gotten a hold of a set of paints" and would paint huge "R"s for "rejected on the back canvas. Rejecting him was not enough for them. They wanted to be sure he never sold another picture. They wanted to hurt him and his family for sick sadistic pleasure. He got really good at re-stretching his canvas with a double layer to cover up their hateful defacement of his original art. They saw themselves as powerful as the deadly committee for public safety in the French Revolution as far as the Art World went and delighted in "sending artists to the guillotine", so to speak.

These hateful little petty tyrants were unable to keep his name out of the history books or to keep his paintings for selling for millions of dollars. This is the treatment someone who creates a new style gets, but developments in applied technology like manufactured tube paints as opposed to hand mixed paints were violently rejected by these types as well and they forcefully proclaimed anyone who used paints from a tube was not a "real artist". Actually, masters had several apprentices that would mix their paints for them. Well, tube paints are pretty well accepted now. So will photography and digital media in time. Today artists have computers instead of indentured servants. You probably  know how bad Photographers were treated, but now it is a respected Art Form.

I read about the hateful things they said about Pastels and Mary Cassat, and now Pastel Paintings are considered Fine Art and Mary Cassat’s works are regarded as masterpieces. Now that snobs have Digital Artists to look down on, Colored Pencils are actually starting to get some respect. Digital artists- Our day too will come."
